V&A Postmodernism: Style & Subversion 1970-1990 Private Event

Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something

 – Eurythmics

Last night the V&A turned circa 1980s for the evening as many (including a very excited ‘me’) descended upon the V&A Museum for a private Postmodernism themed night. Think Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys and Pop Art with the juxtaposition of 18th century busts and sculptures, the event was buzzing with postmodernism chic. Sponsored by Matsercard I also got to hear an exclusive talk with the wonderful and down-to-earth exhibition Co-Creator GLENN ADAMSON who explained how the exhibition was formed, what we can expect from it and the passion behind the movement.

Postmodernism: Style and Subversion was not just a look but a movement – it was all about the attitude darling! This movement changed the ideology of the establishments views on art and design and promoted a vision of self expression, empowerment and radical freedom. From the architecture and interiors, elevations and plans to 80s pop videos, New Wave and power suits I was greatly impressed by the exhibit and quite frankly – I want to go again!! There is a lot to take in, see and hear which is great. The night included badge making (I made sure I created mine) and ended with a great ol’ skool break-dancing dance-off!

Totally loved the DJ! Strike a pose!

The New Wave:: Neon lights, funky interior design, Grace Jones and 80s pop videos!

Grandmaster Flash:: Without a shadow of a doubt the highlight for me was the chance to get up-close & personal and within touching distance from the ORIGINAL turntables from the legend that is Grandmaster Flash – one of the forefathers of Hip Hop.

Postmodernism Shop:: I was like a kid in an 80s sweet shop – full of nostalgic postmod’ products with a 21st century twist.

This is a passionate, nostalgic mind-tripping exhibition not to be missed! There is no way anyone can miss this retro, educational experience which guarantees you will be dancing and voguing your way to the gift shop by the end! Well worth the visit.

If you fancy a taster of the postmodernism experience then definitely head down to the V&A next Friday (28 Oct) for their spectacular LATE NIGHT event! Not only will you get a taste of the postmod’ era but with drag queens and 80s makeovers it’s sure to be an amazing night.
