This week heralds the beginning of a design-packed week and also the start of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW). This event is a three-day design festival running from 24 May through to 26 May. It brings together a trendy and quirky programme of events from exhibitions to debates, discussions to workshops and installations. This is one of the most arty of the exhibitions this year which celebrates and embraces design to the fullest.
Participating in the years CDW festival are Clerkenwell-based showrooms; Ahrend, Wilkhahn, Steelcase, Forbo and Vitra to name but a few. One the exciting events taking place in year and new to the format is The House of Detention – a subterranean Victorian prison hidden in the heart of Clerkenwell. Not usually open to the public, this unique space will house some amazing installations and innovative product displays.
British designer Lulu Guiness OBE has created a one-off commission for CDW. The ‘Be a Pin Up’ (The Clerkenwell Lips Clutch) installation will be housed in front of the iconic London landmark, Clerkenwell Gate for the duration of the festival. Be a Pin Up; is a life-sized pin art installation by the internationally acclaimed handbag designer. Lulu got her inspiration from the AW11/12 collection and in celebration of the collaboration has created a version of the iconic lips – the Clerkenwell Lips Clutch.
It’s going to be a great festival so come and see for yourself.
